Christmas Gift Ideas

For those of you missing out on shopping our vendors during the winter, some of our vendors have websites that allow you to order their products directly. I've listed them below. If there is a particular vendor you are looking for that doesn't have a website, email us at farmersmarketpembroke@gmail.com and we'll put them in touch with you.

Happy Holidays!

Express column summarizing opening day

The link below is a really nice summary of the first week that was written in the Pembroke Express.

http://pembrokexpress.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2825:pembroke-goes-to-market&catid=1:pembroke-news&Itemid=29

Quick note regarding vendors in 2010

We have roughly 19 vendors that committed to the market before the season began and are taking part in the market this year. In the five days since we've opened, we've received over twenty requests from other vendors that are interested in taking part. We think it's best to stick with the terrific vendors that have been with us since the beginning and not add new vendors this season.

We did everything we could think of to get the word out to potential vendors and are especially appreciative of the leap of faith that this year's vendors took. Many of them could have chosen other already established markets but wanted to be a part of what we're doing here in Pembroke. We also really liked the spacing we had on Saturday where there was plenty of rooms for people to be walking around with their dogs, kids could run around etc.

We are flattered that so many people have expressed interested in the past week. If you are interested in being involved in 2011, please send us an email at farmersmarketpembroke@gmail.com. If, for some reason, we have a vendor that can't complete this season and is selling something that is comparable to what you are selling, we wouldn't hesitate to reach out to you for this season.

We won't be the largest market this year but we're confident there's a wide enough array of products and that that will increase as more and more produce comes to fruition. Next year we'll definitely consider adding more spaces but for this year, we're going to stick with the vendors that we have.

Thanks

Opening Day

After nearly a year of planning, plotting and hoping, the Market opened this past Saturday. It exceeded all of our expectations! Thank you for making that happen. We had vendors sell out, we had vendors need to go back to their stores/farms multiple times to get more stuff to sell and the rain didn't arrive until long after we were gone. It was perfect.

If you didn't get a chance to come down, we'll be there again this Saturday morning (July 17th) from 9 am - noon. At 11 am, Pembroke's Youth Librarian Jessica Lamarre will be doing a storytime for kids on the bandstand. If you have little ones, we think they'll really enjoy Miss Jessica.

Thanks again!

Market Opens Saturday

After nearly a year of planning, the Market opens this Saturday. We will have roughly eighteen vendors each week. We'll have local produce, lobster, breads, desserts, organic coffee, eggs, jams and much more. We have some excellent artists and will also have acoustic music playing onstage most weeks. We're confident that we have a terrific group of vendors and we hope that you all have an opporunity to come down on Saturday and show them your support (and buy some excellent items).

Thanks for all your support and we'll see you on the Green.

Sponsorship opportunities

Hi there,

Below is the fundraising email/letter we are sending out. If you are interested in helping to sponsor this year's market, please read below. If you'd like this information emaied to you, shoot us an email at farmersmarketpembroke@gmail.com.

Thanks

Hello,

As many of you are aware, we are in the midst of launching a farmers market in Pembroke. The official launch of the market will be Saturday, July 10th on the Town Green from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The support we’ve received from the community, interested vendors and volunteers has been overwhelming. We think you are going to be very happy with the local products that will be available.

As a brand-new community group, our funding resources are limited and we are writing with hopes of securing sponsorship donations. We are putting together the first annual P.F.M. Guide, an informative brochure with 2010 vendor products and contact information to make your shopping easier both at the market and the rest of the year. The P.F.M. Get Fresh Guide will be available at the market and around town. Individuals, families or non-profits willing to make a donation of $25 will have their names included in the brochure as a friend of the market. Businesses interested in making a donation of $50 donation will have their business name and website included in the guide.

With the money raised, we hope to increase the awareness of not only the Pembroke Farmers’ Market through advertising and signage but also of the importance of eating locally, supporting local farmers, growers and artisans and educating our community on safe, healthy eating habits.

We hope the market will be a part of the town for many years to come. Please help us continue our efforts to a successful farmers’ market for our community! If you are interested in sponsoring the market, please fill out the attached information below.

Thank you for your support,

Matt York and Christine Falk

Donations must be received by June 15th to be printed in the 2010 PFM Get Fresh Guide:

April Update

Hello all,

Christine and I had a pair of good meetings this week. We met with the Board of Health along with a few interested vendors and they were very helpful in answering some questions that we had. We also met again with the Recreation Department. They agreed that we could have access to the bathrooms at the Community Center each week. That's a big win because it saves us the cost of renting porta-potties which likely would have been pricey (and kinda gross).

A few other notes:

1) I know that some of you had expressed interest in selling baked goods. It's a state law, however, that baked goods can only come from a commercial kitchen and I know that some of you mentioned you didn't have access to one. We were surprised to find out that there is a commercial kitchen inside the community center. We talked at our meeting last night about the possibility of possibly renting the kitchen as a market and believe there's a good chance we could do so at a fairly nominal price. If any of you might be interested in that, please let me know. I wanted to gauge interest before going any further w/ the community center folks.

2) If any of you plan on using scales at the market, I'd suggest you give a call to Joseph Suppa (781-293-3864). He's the sealer of weights and measures for Pembroke.

3) We've had some musicians and artists that have expressed an interest in performing at the market. We have a great bandstand for doing so. If you know of anybody that might be a good fit, let me know. We're ideally looking for fairly low-key or acoustic acts (no metal or gangsta rap...sorry).

4) We're thinking of having a fundraiser/party in June to help pay for any advertising, unforeseen expenses and possibly to be able to give a little money to the artists that perform. I think it'd also be a great opportunity for vendors, volunteers and supporters of the market to get together and celebrate what we hope will be a very a successful summer. If you think you'd be interested in attending, let us know. I'd like to have a ballpark figure interest-wise before we go and try and find a place to hold it.

5) We are working with the state to get the market approved for WIC (women, infants and nutrition program). Vendors that want to be offer WIC need to take a one-hour certification from the state. Once I have some dates for the certification, I'll let you know. It's a great program that you can read more about here

6) Think that's about it. Contracts should be ready very soon.

Be well,

Matt York

Spring is coming!

After all the rain over the weekend, it is so nice to see the sun again. Spring is in the air and the signs are all over my yard...bulbs are popping up everywhere! Most exciting for me is the garlic growing in the garden. This is my first year growing garlic. My mother-in-law gave my some bulbs in the fall and I was thrilled (that's where I am in life now, garlic bulbs make me happy)!

Matt & I continue to work on the contracts for the market. We will be meeting with both the Board of Health and the Recreation Department in the next month. We are hoping to have contracts available in April.

We are still looking for vendors and musicians. Anyone who is interested who has not contacted us yet, please either email us at farmersmarketpembroke@gmail.com or call Matt @ 781-953-6177 or Christine @ 617-293-2480.

Finally, today is the Plymouth Winter Farmers' Market at Plimoth Plantation from 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM. I've heard great things about this market and plan on going. Stop in and buy local! For more information visit www.plimoth.org.

A great turnout for our 2nd meeting!

Thank you to everyone who came out to make our 2nd Pembroke Farmers' Market meeting a success! We were thrilled to have twice as many people in attendance as our last meeting. It was great to see so many familiar faces as well as some new faces. Interested vendors include a large produce farm, a farm with sheep, rabbits, wool and soaps, an herb vendor, lobstermen, bakers, honey and maple syrup producer, a local deli, a potter, craftsmen, local farmstand operator and a jewlery maker. More vendors have expressed interest. We were thrilled by the number of volunteers! Thank you so much for coming out to support the market. Without all of you, the Pembroke Farmers' Market would not be possible! Anyone who was unable to unattend, please do not hesitate to contact us for meeting agenda and handouts.
